Mud cloth textile, African fabric in a half piece cut lengthwise. 60” long x 22” wide. Great size to make pillows or use on a table top. Cleaned and ready to use. Hand crafted in Mali, Africa. This color is deep burnished golden brass.

Abstract Dogon tribe mask symbols. There are two repeats that run across the fabric.
100% cotton, washable with care.

It is my understanding that the symbols on this textile represent a Dogon mask called kanaga.
"These masks are worn primarily at dama, a collective funerary rite for Dogon men. The ritual’s goal is to ensure the safe passage of the spirits of the deceased to the world of the ancestors. The ceremony is organized by members of Awa, a male initiation society with ritual and political roles within Dogon society. As part of the public rites related to death and remembrance, Awa society members are responsible for the creation and performance of the masks. This mud cloth represents these Dogon tribe masks."

This abstract form has been interpreted as a symbol of the creative force of god and the arrangement of the universe. The upper crossbar represents the sky and the lower one, the earth.

As with all hand drawn and hand dyed pieces, this item has some unique attributes like uneven printing, uneven color, and cotton nubs, but these traits add to the beauty and unique quality of this hand made fabric. Ends are unfinished.
