About the Artisans & Co-op:
Our Artisan partners are experts with their standing foot pedal looms and they create stunning blankets. The collective began as a single family traveling throughout Guatemala in order to sell their quality textiles. As demand grew, they incorporated other members of their pueblo into the fold in order to take on larger orders and benefit the community as a whole. The group is now comprised of ten families that fill client orders to make their living and preserve this local artisan tradition.
The history of weaving in this village dates back to the late 1700s. These blankets were historically produced as trade items. Every throw is woven on a standing loom, then taken to the local sulfurous hot springs for an intensive felting process that cleans the blankets of oil, dirt and impurities. This also makes for a thicker more durable piece. After this, the blankets are brushed to release loose fibers resulting in a silky soft textile that does not pill and with proper care will look new for years.
